Prakriti and Vikriti in the EMR: documenting Ayurveda properly

emedAyush 27 May 2026 5 min read

Constitution and imbalance are the foundation of an Ayurvedic plan. If they live on paper, the record — and the reporting — is incomplete.

Ask an Ayurveda doctor where treatment begins and the answer is constitution. Prakriti sets the baseline; Vikriti describes how far the patient has drifted from it. Everything downstream — diet, lifestyle, medicines, therapies — follows from that reading. So it's striking how often this foundational information never makes it into the system of record.

Why it ends up on paper

Generic EMRs have no structured place for a dosha profile, so doctors do the sensible thing: they keep it in a notebook. But a note in a book can't guide the plan at the next visit, can't be compared over time, and can't roll up into any report about the facility's patients.

What structured assessment gives you

  • A consistent Prakriti profile — Vata, Pitta, Kapha — captured the same way across doctors and branches.
  • A Vikriti reading you can compare against Prakriti to focus treatment on the actual imbalance.
  • Agni and Ama assessment as part of the same picture.
  • The classical examinations — Ashtavidha, Dashavidha, Nadi Pariksha — as structured fields, not loose text.
A constitution noted once and never referenced again isn't a record. It's a memory aid that expires.

The payoff: continuity and progress

When Prakriti and Vikriti live in the EMR, every future consultation starts from the right baseline, and re-assessment over the course of treatment becomes a way to show progress — not just to the doctor, but to the patient through their portal. Documentation stops being a chore done after the fact and becomes part of the consultation itself.

Then the prescription follows naturally

With constitution and imbalance in the record, the prescription can carry what it should: medicines with Anupana, Pathya and Apathya, and lifestyle guidance — a complete Ayurvedic plan, documented once and available everywhere it's needed.
